Much-loved Beach Cafe returns

The wait is finally over, the Beach Cafe is back!

The refurbished cafe is set to open its doors this Saturday under the new operators Smokey Uppercuts, who have been working tirelessly with the Whyalla City Council to ensure it could be-reopened for summer.

After the cafe was closed by council 12 months ago, Smokey Uppercuts were selected to operate an upgraded cafe facility after an extensive tender process.

The cafe will be open from 7am-7pm, seven days a week, serving up the traditional smoked food that Smokeys offer while also having cafe food options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Smokey Uppercuts Owner Dylan Laherstorfer and his team will have their usual transportable cooking services adjacent the café, with meals and drinks to be served inside the café building.

This will ensure the existing building can be utilised while continuing to meet all the relevant food, health, safety and building code requirements.

One of the key components of any cafe's menu is the coffee, and Mr Laherstorfer is excited to be offering a blend from Eyre Roasted - a Port Lincoln company.

"We have been in talks with them since the announcement got made, they're really excited to team up with us and make their brand new blend West is Best available in Whyalla," he said.

"We've had a few samples and it's beautiful."

Given the anticipated high level of interest, Mr Laherstorfer asked for the community's understanding during the initial stages of the cafe operation.

"I know the expectations are high, I think we will be able to deliver on those expectations, but we ask that people help us find our feet as this is the first time we've run a cafe," he said.

The process of taking on the cafe has allowed Dylan to expand his team by over 20 employees, boosting local employment.

"Our crew has grown exponentially over the last week ... we have a great range of experienced people," Mr Laherstorfer said.

Council chief executifve officer Justin Commons said council were looking at long-term solutions to deliver further retail opportunities on the foreshore.

"Having a retail offering on the foreshore is important as a service to both the local community and visitors," he said.
