The Whyalla Football League has told of the sudden death of Jack Velthuizen who served as president for the past six years.

The league issued a statement on Wednesday, mourning the passing of the key figure in local football.

"It is with sadness that the Whyalla Football League advises of the unexpected passing of the president of the league, Jack Velthuizen," they said.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to Mary and his family. Jack's commitment and service to the league and community was far-reaching. Vale, Jack."

Mr Velthuizen was born in Holland and migrated to Australia in 1960 when he was 10 years old. He grew up playing football and had been president since 2015.

He oversaw the redevelopment of Bennett Oval, which attracted an AFL preseason game between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs in 2019, and the league's 100-year anniversary last year.
