One of South Australia's longest-serving architecture practices, Russell & Yelland, has celebrated more than 80 years designing for South Australian communities this week.

Russell & Yelland has maintained project links with Whyalla since its founding in 1939, having designed a number of facilities around the steel city.

Russell & Yelland's most recent designs for Whyalla include the recently completed Copperhouse Court aged care facility redevelopment for Kindred Living.

A masterplan for Samaritan College is currently underway, and the Whyalla Hospital Renal Unit Upgrade is also under construction, expected to be completed in October.

Directors John Held, Alistair McHenry and Stewart Caldwell lead the company, recognised within the industry for their commitment to education, health and aged care facilities design.

Mr Held said Russell & Yelland's connections with Whyalla can be traced back to the company's founding.

"It is incredibly important to our practice that we continue to develop the regions as much as we do our major cities," he said.

"Our architecture's greatest contribution is in designing for more resilient South Australian communities."

The practice has received numerous SA and NT Learning Environments Australia Awards for its designs, as well as the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects' SA Chapter Awards in 2019.

While a busy period and a global pandemic might have subdued celebrations somewhat, the team is excited to mark its 81st year this week, unveiling a much-anticipated new look.
