A young leader in the community who has dedicated himself to fundraising activities over many years, Blake Brougham has been named a finalist in the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards SA.

Blake has played a key role in the Whyalla Youth Advisory Council as their Deputy Mayor and has used his musical talents to raise funds through events such as Jeans for Genes Day and Carols in the Park.

He was nominated for the awards by long-time friend Emily Rawlings, who has collaborated with through the Whyalla Music Association (WMA).

Blake said it was good to get some recognition for his volunteer work and he was very excited to be a finalist.

"I was quite shocked because I dind't know I had been nominated, I was very happy to say the least...I haven't had very much exposure to awards, definitely not of this magnitude," he said.

Through the YAC, Blake has been involved in major community events such as the uneARTh Festival, the Rainbow Run and Whyalla Youth Week.

"The first major thing we did for the community was bringing an ice skating rink to the Westland Shopping Centre, and since then we've been working with groups like Headspace to help out where we can," he said.

"The beauty of volunteering is that the more you put into it the more you get out, I know a little bit about most people in the community now and I can rely on a lot of them for support."

A talented guitarist and singer, Blake has been performing for many years. More recently he has been performing as a duo with Eloise Fisher and mentoring young musos as part of the WMA.

"It's nice to be performing as a duo because I can take a step back and support Eloise in her music," he said.

Outside of volunteering and music, Blake has been working in the call centre at his family's business, Des's Cabs.

He has also recently volunteered his time to help out those in the community forced to self-isolate due to the coronavirus in a fantastic display of community spirit.

The winners of the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards SA will be announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner to be held at Hilton Adelaide on Friday, August 21.
