I hope everyone has been enjoying the "greatest of" articles in the Whyalla News in the last few weeks.
The response has been brilliant with ex-players and soccer supporters from all eras commenting and talking about the ins and outs which can only be positive for our soccer competition here in Whyalla.
I was going to put forward my defenders list this week but I've decided to wait until after the new year and give myself a break as it is a lot of hours and tiring.
This has probably been the hardest journalistic work I've ever had to do but I've learnt so much myself doing this project and it be rewarding listening to and getting messages from teammates, family members or friends of people named and giving them a bit of happiness and pride for just a few minutes in their lives.
This list isn't just for the players on the list but for everyone that has ever donned a strip and played in our local competition in Whyalla to say "I played with him" or "I played in that era" including myself.
So look out for "Whyalla's greatest defenders" after the new year followed by the greatest keepers.
While doing these "greatest of" articles I noticed something quite extraordinary.
In the 61 years of league championships up for grabs in our soccer region, Andy Faulds along with his son Scott and grandson Caleb have been involved in winning 25 of them, amazing!
In local soccer news, rumours have it that Westland United will be hoping to sign Corey King and possibly Damon Rigg for the coming new season while Wanderers are looking to sign Peter Agoth from Canberra but he may need surgery on his knee before he steps onto the park.
Forward Sean Kelly is moving back to Whyalla and Croatia are possibly the favourites to gain his signature and Steel's Aaron Ledington may give his ankle more time to heal and skip most of next season.
Ex-Westland United player Lachlan Barr has signed for Heidelberg for the coming season in the Victorian premier league to continue a legacy of Whyalla greats to play there including Yakka Banovic and Alan Scott.
This will give Barr more exposure as Melbourne have three A-league sides and a dream move could only be one step away.
We wish him all the best!
