Thriller win for United

Last-minute penalty save gives Westland 3-2 victory

Westland United Keeper Gibbs went from villain to hero with a last-minute penalty save to give his side a thrilling 3-2 win over Lions at Jenkins Park on Saturday.

The scores were locked at 1-1 at half time then early in the second half Lions went in front.

Westland fought back though with two quick goals to take the lead then with seconds remaining Gibbs gave away a penalty only to save superbly from Gonzales to give the Red Devils all the points.

Westlands scored through Papoulis 2 and Payne while Worsnop and Gonzales scored for Lions.

In the reserves, Lions had a 6-1 victory over Westland.

Sunday's game saw Wanderers ease past Croatia to the tune of 5-1 at Swandel Park on Saturday to stay one point ahead of Westlands with two rounds remaining.

Wanderers took the lead after 20 minutes as Dale Robinson ghosted into the back post to guide it home and five minutes later a slick move between Mikic and Joslyn saw Fellah flick his header to the back post and once again Dale Robinson banged it past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

After 30 minutes Wanderers looked to have made the game safe as the Blues attacked a corner and the ball fell to Heron and he steered it in from close range for a 3-0 half time lead.

Croatia pushed players forward in the second half looking for a goal and it paid dividends early as the ball fell nicely on King's left foot and there was only one outcome after that as he curled a beauty into the far top corner to pull one back.

Croatia looked for another but this left holes at the back and Shannon's bursting run from his own defence saw him with a chance and he was able to side foot it home on the second attempt for 4-1 and near the end Joslyn was brought down and dispatched his own penalty as Wanderers prevailed 5-1.

WANDERERS CROWNED RESERVES CHAMPIONS

Wanderers reserves took out this season's league championship with a comprehensive 15-1 victory over Croatia on Sunday to take an unassailable lead with two rounds remaining.

If Wanderers can avoid defeat in those final games they will be the first reserves side to go a league season undefeated since Croatia's reserves in 2015.

With a mix of young and experienced players, the Blues have played some nice football this season and boast 4 of the top 5 goal scorers in the association while only conceding a record 9 goals so far.

Looks like they'll be favourites for a treble in a few weeks time.
