End of winter golf season approaching

With the closing day of Winter Golf scheduled for October 15, our current captain is working in overdrive to calculate all competitors that score points over two or several days, in women's events.

Leonie Kellaway and her match committee have been super busy having recently had the state silver event and also the Whyalla Open in which to organise. It doesn't just happen; events of this magnitude require many hours of time given by a dedicated group.

The club is indeed very fortunate to have volunteers willing to give their services. Well done to captain Leonie and her committee! The newly-elected committee for the forthcoming year are: Captain and vice captain - both to be decided, committee - Annette Cotter, Wendy Beames, Val Callaghan, Marcia Smith, Marge Nicholls.

On Wednesday, the veteran nine-holers played a stableford competition with scores slightly down due to the heavy atmosphere. Rob Burt came in the winner on 16 points and has had much success of late, with a steady approach to the game.

Saturday's nine hole stableford event was played in windy conditions which created havoc, yet the scores were impressive. John Wade was really in the groove amassing 18 stableford points following on from his success at Crystal Brook last week in the Northern District (SA Veterans Sandgreens Championship) where he won the C Grade division. This was a really impressive win for John as he was opposed to some very talented contenders. Congratulations on the victory, Wade-ey.

The Laura Golf Club will host the next veterans competition with the season drawing to a close toward the end of September. The Veteran Golfers Assoc requires an injection of new members from all participating clubs next season.

Ladies who will celebrate their birthdays in September include Robyn Phillis on the ninth, Margaret Herbert the 13th and Maureen Heading on the 29th.

Robyn Phillis and Colleen Howell fronted up for a game of golf last week after a short absence with Howell winning the competition.
