Emerging leaders in the Upper Spencer Gulf are being given the chance to hone their skills with the Leaders Institute of South Australia.

The Governor's Leadership Foundation Program encourages participants to reflect on our state and how aspects of culture, economy, society, environment, business and Government are connected.

A new nine-day program has been developed for the Upper Spencer Gulf region to ensure the next generation of leaders drive future opportunities to build a better community.

Leaders Institute of South Australia Chief Executive Officer Cathie Brown said the program has been catered specifically for the changing climate Port Augusta and surrounds.

"Last year we came to Port Augusta and Whyalla and one of the things that struck me with the people we were meeting was how connected they all were, but also how they were probably people who have been leaders in the community for many years," she said.

"The thought for me was what's happening to develop the next generation of leaders for the community, because there are so many opportunities in this region with the Sundrop Farms and what's happening in Whyalla with SIMEC Energy and GFG.

"Can we have a next generation of leaders that actually makes the most of those opportunities for the area to grow economically? But also for social cohesion to be a better community, and a better community to be apart of."

The program calls for emerging leaders, team leaders, managers or those in project management role who want to build their communications skills and understand the elements of leadership.

It's open to people from the ages of 25-45, from the most senior and experienced leaders to those in their first leadership role.

"They will also do a community action project, so they will be working on a complex issue in the community," Ms Brown said.

"I have been talking to mayors about what kind of issues they would like to see a group work on and then they will work with a non-for-profit organisation for instance and come up with some ideas about how to move that issue forward."

There are a large number of full and part scholarships available, with Indigenous people and those with disabilities especially encouraged to apply.

As well as people from culturally and linguistically-diverse backgrounds and those from the not-for-profit and small business sector.

"A fish rots from the head is my theory, so if you don't have strong leadership in a community you won't make the most of your opportunities," Ms Brown said.

"It can really make a difference to the way a community functions and how successful it is. Leadership is fundamental.

"We can help to grow the next generation of people who are really switched on, see opportunities, make the most of them and can lead other people through that change."
