Code Blue enacted for homeless

Extras services will be available to the homeless tonight as the South Australian Government declares the first Code Blue response for the winter.

The Code Blue applies to the regional towns of Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Riverland, Murray Bridge, the Fleurieu Peninsula (Kangaroo Island) and Adelaide.

Regional homelessness services in the affected areas will activate local Code Blue plans and Housing SA will work with regional partners to ensure shelter and outreach services are available.

The response is activated when Housing SA and the Homelessness Gateway Service (Uniting Communities) decide that heavy rain and strong winds making sleeping unsheltered difficult, and potentially dangerous, for rough sleeper to keep dry.

Information about regional arrangements and emergency accommodation is available through the South Australia's Homelessness Gateway. The service will continue to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Anyone who is homeless or at risk of homelessness is encouraged to contact the service on 1800 003 308.
