Well! The Indian summer has certainly gone and the cold weather looks set to continue. The sudden change has been a real shock to the system, however, golf is a winter sport (so we are led to believe).
The senior men's nine-hole stableford competition was contested in chilly but dry conditions but the 18-hole guys copped a downpour before they had ended their round. Tony Jones was in great touch to record 18 stableford points in the nine-hole competition to take the honours. A popular competitor, Jones was pleased with the result in particular the 'birdie' he scored on the difficult ninth which capped an enjoyable round.
The senior guys experienced an icy cold afternoon of golf on Saturday for their nine-hole event. They, however, were luckier than those who teed off in the morning as the temperature did rise a couple of degrees by midday. Danny Bastian had yet another good round accumulating 18 stableford points, one better than Dave Birdseye who finished on 17.
John Smith, who is convalescing after major surgery, made it out to the club for a short time on Saturday to catch up with the 'boys' thanks to wife Marc who was on hand to supervise proceedings! Great to hear!
The first round (of four) of the ladies championship will have already been played when this write-up goes to press with the second round taking place today (Thursday). The winner in each grade is judged on her best three rounds. All grades will be hotly contested with many of last year's high achievers featuring consistently on the winners list.
I see in the Sunday Mail where our chairman of the board played well to be runner-up in the A Grade division stroke event. Well done, Goldy (Noel Goldsworthy).
The Northern District Veteran (Men) will compete at Wirrabara on Tuesday, June 11 (in lieu of Port Germein).
I wish all ladies who compete in the championships the very best of luck and trust that the weather will treat you all well!
Good wishes to Allan Howell for a speedy recovery from club members and we trust that Rob Burt will soon be out on the course.
