Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham has paid tribute to outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May for her service in what has been a difficult time attempting to withdraw her country from the European Union.
Ms May announced on Friday she will be stepping down on June 7 after repeated Brexit failures.
"I pay tribute to Theresa May for her service in what has obviously been an incredibly difficult set of circumstances to navigate," Senator Birmingham told Sky News on Sunday.
"Her government has been a good one for us to work with."
Former UK foreign minister Boris Johnson is a frontrunner to takeover from Ms May, declaring that the UK will be leaving the EU in October with or without a deal.
Senator Birmingham warned there would be trade disruptions should there be no deal, but said Australian businesses have been preparing for whatever outcome occurs.
"They are matters for the UK, all we can do is make sure Australia is as well prepared as possible in whatever scenario," he said.
