Two people have been airlifted to Adelaide after suffering serious injuries in a head-on crash on the Lincoln Highway west of Whyalla.

A van and utility collided on the highway just after 6am at Middleback Range, with police and emergency services attending the scene of the crash.

The drivers of both vehicles, a 49-year-old man from Port Lincoln in the van and a 27-year-old man from Whyalla driving the ute, were trapped in their vehicles for more than two hours before emergency services could free them from the wreckage.

They were subsequently airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with multiple injuries, which are not considered life threatening.

The Lincoln Highway was closed to all traffic for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene. The Highway was reopened to all traffic at 10.30am.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
