Long-time local Rotarian and volunteer Jane Owens is officially stepping into the role of District Governor for District 9500, which stretches from Alice Springs to Port Lincoln.

A former scout leader, Ms Owens joined the Whyalla Rotary Group in 2008 and has been a Rotarian for the past 11 years. She has held many leadership roles in the club and was President between 2012 and 2013.

Since 2014 has Ms Owens worked at a district level as a facilitator for the Rotary Leadership Institute. She has also been an Assistant Governor, working with clubs in Port Augusta, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Roxby Downs

Her final training for the position of District Governor took place last year at the International Assembly in San Diego, USA, which 545 District Governor Elects from around the world attended.

“Over the past 2 years I have built up some wonderful friendships with all the District Governors in Australia and New Zealand,” she said.

“When we went to San Diego that brought us closer together and let us meet all these other people from around the world. What was amazing is that we were all like-minded, we all want to better the world.”

Ms Owens says her role is to ensure that Rotary ‘continues to be the wonderful organisation it is, encouraging growth in our membership, expanding our reach and increasing our impact’.

“I have been told that I am a good leader,” she said.

“I have a good standing in my own community and I am now well-known from Alice Springs to Port Lincoln in the Rotary World.”

She will be visiting all 44 Rotary Clubs in her district between the Northern Territory and South Australia to engage with their members.

Ms Owens will be the last governor of District 9500, with the district set to amalgamate with District 9250 and become District 9510 at the end of her year.

In April 2020 District 9500 will be holding its last conference in Whyalla.

“Like Whyalla, Rotary is going through enormous changes and I think that it is only fitting that the conference is here in Whyalla,” Ms Owens said.
