A unique production of George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm is coming to Whyalla.

Renato Musolino (The Gods Of Strangers, The Kreutzer Sonata), will embody over 20 characters when he performs a stage adaption of the literary masterpiece in March at the Middleback Arts Centre.

Orwell’s novel tells the tale of the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm, who overthrow their master and take control of the farm they live on, believing they are beginning a life of freedom.

But it is quite the opposite when the cunning pigs Napoleon and Snowball take control. From here is born the famous quote: “All animals are equal – but some are more equal than others.”

The play will serve as a farewell to outgoing artistic director Geordie Brookman, who will farewell the State Theatre Company with the production.

Speaking to the Whyalla News, Mr Musolino said learning to perform as each individual character involved a lot of repetition and detailed construction.

“We really took our time in personalising all of the characters. We looked for traits unique to each animal, and eventually switching between them became second nature,” he said.

“Each animal has a particular quirk. The pigs are a lot of fun, but they are the most challenging considering there are so many of them.

“It’s a great challenge to make them each sound different from one another. Sometimes you have to change from animal to animal very quickly, your whole voice and body has to change.”

Mr Brookman said the stage adaption was inspired by the TV series Black Mirror, with the set to feature laser lighting and raw theatre effects to allow words and images to drive the experience.

“To be making a piece of intimate, direct storytelling with one of my favourite local actors feels like the perfect way to bring my time with the Company to a close,” he said.

Animal Farm will be coming to the Middleback Arts Centre on Friday, March 15 at 8pm. To purchase tickets ring Country Arts SA on 8444 0417.
