The Whyalla Family History Group will be creating its own memorable date this month with a big day of events and a special opening.
The group will be holding a history expo, an official opening of its research centre and a 30th anniversary dinner on Monday, November 26.
The day kicks off at 1pm with the SA History Expo – Learning About Our Pioneers at the Roopena Football Club with guest speakers.
Bob Stace, from the Pioneers Association of SA, will present a talk on Colonel William Light while retired Deputy Police Commissioner John White will talk about his book More Than Just Bricks and Mortar.
The day then moves to the official opening and dedication of the Jessie Bremner Research Centre at the Mt Laura Homestead Museum at 4.30pm.
The group’s custom-fitted railway carriage will be opened in dedication to one of the group’s driving forces Jessie Bremner, who sadly passed away this year.
The day’s events conclude with the group’s 30th Anniversary Dinner back at the Roopena Football Club from 6pm.
Group committee member June Phillips-Smith said the opening of the Jessie Bremner Research Centre would hold special significance for the society and the Whyalla community.
“Jessie was one of the original members of the group 30 years ago,” June said.
“She not only collected a small mountain of Whyalla history, she also stored it in her own house for many years.
“She was a driving force of the Whyalla Family History Group, resident genealogist, point of contact and custodian of so many records and invaluable history.
“This new research centre will house much of the material Jessie collected and ensured won’t be lost to Whyalla.
“It is entirely appropriate the centre carries her name and it will be a memorable and emotional event.”
The Whyalla Family History Group is a community service group assisting others in researching and compiling their family history and meeting with other people and similar organisations interested in the hobby.
The Whyalla City Council is a proud supporter of the history group. The group’s anniversary events have been helped by a $300 donation from Council.
