Long Street Primary School put one foot into the future on Wednesday, officially opening their Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Centre.
Funded by $1 million from the state government’s STEM Works program in 2016, the facility was opened by Member for Giles Eddie Hughes and Long Street Finance Officer Raylene Meacham.
The STEM Centre includes a central ramp for robotics and a media room with a green screen and tiered seating.
Importantly, learning can also be taken outside with connections to a covered outdoor learning area. These adaptable spaces allow for whole class, small groups and individual work areas.
The facility was designed Russell & Yelland architects and built by A & G D'Orazio builders, with Ms Meacham playing an important part in design process.
“Cooking was a big thing, we didn’t have any cooking facilities before,” she said.
“Now we’ve got garden beds for students so they can grow the food, cook it and eat it.”
It’s a big win for a regional school like Long Street, with students now able to access a new form of media through the dedicated presentation space and play with modern robotics.
“It’s been really good for our students in the country to have access to these kinds of things. They normally miss out on this kind of technology,” Ms Meacham said.
“I’m really proud now that the STEM Centre has come together. The architects were brilliant, we had an idea and they could provide us with graphics to visualise what it might like.”
Member for Giles Eddie Hughes said it was key to have students exposed to STEM at a young age.
“We know that 75 per cent of the jobs in the fastest growing industry are in those STEM areas, and there are really big shortages in Australia at the moment when it comes to people with qualifications in that area” he said.
“If we want to equip our children for the jobs of the future, there needs to be a focus on STEM. But it’s not just about jobs, it’s about equipping students with skills for life.”
The Hincks Avenue Primary School STEM Centre was also opened on the same day.
