Golf Bowls launches new season

Whyalla Golf Bowls Opening Day was held in perfect weather on Sunday. A large group of bowlers and guests took to the greens to start the season of 2018-19.

President Michael Hennessey welcomed Whyalla Golf Club President Brian Cotter and other guests including Carol Shillabeer and Lee-anne Shinnick from Port Augusta BC Sandra King, Tony Brewster and Mark Cooper from ETSA BC plus David Bull and Dawn Ross from Whyalla BC. Michael also welcomed life members Terry Jones, Heather Prosser and Dawn McKeough.

The Golf Bowls Committee for season 2018-19 was introduced. A minute’s silence was the held to remember members and family who have passed away. Before the game of bowls started a surprise presentation was made to Rita Jones who was presented with life membership of the Whyalla Golf Club.

The presentation was made by Brian Cotter on behalf of Noel Goldsworthy, chairman of the board, of the Golf Club. Rita expressed her appreciation for the award but made mention of the club members who had offered their assistance over her 22 years with the club. Rita also congratulated golfer Glenda Clayton who had been the recipient of life membership.


A change of format saw the first competition at the Whyalla Golf Bowls Club for season 2018-19. The 100 up event changed to open gender and ladies took part in this game. Semis Chris Schrapel defeated Clay Everett 103-77. Rod Prosser defeated Jack  Buckley 103-87. Finals Chris Schrapel 104 Rod Prosser 76.
