The Whyalla Bowling Club had its official opening day for the 2018/19 bowling season on September 2, with members and invited guests sharing a game of bowls and afternoon tea.
Club president David Bull began proceedings by thanking club members and representatives from Whyalla Golf Bowling Club (Pres: Mick Hennessy, Secretary: Rita Jones and Terry Jones) for their attendance, and then introduced the other executive committee members of the Whyalla Bowling Club for the 2018/19 season.
V-Pres Men: Ian Drewitt. V-Pres Women: Dec Ring, Treasurer: Barry Thomas, Secretary: Dawn Ross, and General Committee: Dave Bass, Kay Bass, Jeff Fell, Tom Power (also Bar Manager) and Bob Melville (also Tournament Director).
Changes to the Association Pennant format were highlighted, which should see the season have more interest for all players involved.
The club has also made major changes to its tournament format, with all competitions now open to all male and female bowlers, seeding of players for all pairs tournaments except Club Championships, the introduction of a sets play tournament, and more flexible rules for playing the rounds of club tournaments.
The official bowls pennant season contested in first and second division by clubs representing Whyalla, Whyalla Golf, Wilminton, Quorn, Pt Augusta and ETSA (Pt Augusta) will commence on Saturday, October 6.
The Whyalla Bowling Club will soon commence the first of its internal tournaments in September, re-introduce Friday night counter teas as of September 21, and are currently seeking teams for its Monday Night Social Bowls competition which starts on October 22.
The Monday Night Social Bowls competition to be run as two separate eight-week formats, one prior to Christmas and the other February/ March 2019.
Both Dave Bull and Mick Hennessy wished all players the best of luck for the upcoming season and hoped all players would continue to have enjoyment within such a social friendly game.
The traditional bowling of the jack and first bowl of the season was by Richard Munday (hard working green keeper) and Dawn Ross (Club Secretary) respectively, then members and guests enjoyed a game of ten ends, before all enjoying afternoon tea.
Highest winning margin winners on the day were a pairs combination of Mick Hennessy (Whyalla Golf) and Dennis Steenson (Whyalla Town).
