On behalf of the Whyalla Football League I would like to encourage everyone to attend this year’s grand final.
A key priority for the league is to make football in Whyalla player, family and spectator friendly.
Aussie Rules has the highest participation of any sport in Whyalla, which makes it central to the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community.
The redevelopment of Bennett Oval facilities contribute significantly to that as it is still the premier sporting ground in Whyalla.
So we will keep on pushing for its much-needed upgrade.
I have been so impressed by the commitment of people at all levels of football in Whyalla; from players, coaches and umpires right through to the people who give up their evenings to cook meals at the clubs.
This is really the cement that holds the city together and is especially important now when times are so fluid.
Financial sustainability is also critical to all of our futures and the WFL continues to work with the support of all the clubs and by keeping the entry fee the same and affordable, and by encouraging patrons to use our canteen and bar facilities, we will be able to move forward making a small profit each year to use for upgrades and repairs that become necessary.
This year all clubs have been asked from time to time to assist by supplying boundary umpires and even field umpires.
We all know this is not a good situation so we ask that if you like football and want to keep fit, please give consideration to umpiring.
This message applies especially to any players who have recently retired and want to maintain their interest in footy and fitness.
This year’s grand final will follow the same successful formula as previous years and we will be working closely with SAPOL and local security to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day.
In particular, there are very strict licence conditions relating to alcohol.
This means that no alcohol is allowed to be bought into the grounds and all cars will be searched by security on entry.
Don’t worry, there will be plenty of food and drink available for purchase all around the ground from mid-morning until 5.30pm.
The WFL really asks for your cooperation on this issue.
On a final note, I would like to thank our sponsors, Whyalla City Council, GFG Alliance, Harsco, Beyond Bank, West End, and all of the advertisers around the ground as they too are a key ingredient to making football a success in Whyalla.
