Between August 23 and 26, golfers from Whyalla and 13 regional and metropolitan clubs gathered  in Whyalla for the 2018 Whyalla Open Golf Championships.

The Women's 18 Hole Championship was held on Thursday 23rd with the Men's 36 Hole Competition held over two days on the 25th and 26th.

Apart from a few drops of rain on Thursday (generally welcome), the weather was perfect for golf.

The Men's Championship was run in three grades - A, B and C, over two days.

As is often the case, winners on individual days were not necessarily overall winners once best averages were calculated.

For some this was just another couple of days of golf - for many this was serious stuff!

Competition among "A" graders was particularly keen at the top end.

Club captain Chad McLean shot a 72 (off the stick) on Saturday, while his nearest rival Shannon Matthews, from Tanunda Golf Club, shot a 74.

On Sunday Shannon shot another 74 while Chad was one over par at 73.

This was superb golf from both players and particularly rewarding for Shannon the "out-of-towner".

Congratulations to these two fine golfers.
