Residents who have endured the pain of losing a family member to suicide will come together in a powerful display for World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Roses in the Ocean Walk will begin at Sempre Cafe and end at the Whyalla Foreshore, where participants will place roses in the ocean to remember those lost to suicide.

Whyalla Suicide Prevention Network Chairperson Janice Eygenraam said over 200 people had registered for the event, more than doubling last year’s numbers.

“The interest has been captured by the Rose in the Ocean part of it. The rose represents the remembrance of someone who has taken their own life,” she said.

“It’s really encouraging to have that many people register. This event joins people together to share in bereavement, it shows them that it’s OK to talk about it.”

The walk is being organised by a number of local mental health agencies, including the WSPN, Centacare, Primary Health Care Network, headspace, I’m Not Afraid To Talk, and Stand By.

Registered participants will be provided with a rose to place in the ocean when the group arrives at the foreshore.

Ms Eygenraam said the tradition of placing roses in the ocean to remember those lost to suicide started in Queensland.

“It represents that suicide is real, it’s out there, and it affects people,” she said.

The walk will be held this Sunday, September 9 starting at 8:30am. A guest speaker from headspace will make a speech at the foreshore, while a counselor will also be available for anyone who wants to talk.

Those who are looking for a shorter walk can meet the delegation at the foreshore to participate in the Roses in the Ocean display.
