Red Devils upset the Lions

Westland United upset Lions 1-0 at Jenkins Park on Saturday thanks to a single goal by Dave Dunbar early in the first half. Westlands had Edmondson, Mitchell and Shannon missing and their squad was thin with half their players helping out in the reserves.

After 10 minutes Dunbar pounced onto a loose ball in the box and fired it passed Welgraven in goal for a 1-0 lead. Soon after Lions were reduced to 10 players after a late challenge on Rhodes but that didn’t deter the home side as Worsnop cut one back for Kinnear but his shot went straight to Gibbs in goal, Hazeal and Nielsen also had good chances but they failed to capitalise.

The second half was all Lions as they reigned down on Westlands goal but the Red Devils defence was resolute with Barr Marshalling well at the back. Lions created plenty of chances and should have won the game but a gallant Westlands held on to put another twist in the tale of the league championship.

In the reserves Lions had a 5-2 victory over Westlands to go top in the reserves league championship.

In Sunday’s game Croatia put on a first half Masterclass to finally thump Wanderers 10-1 at Swandel Park. First half goals to King (3) Sullivan (2) and Faulds had them up 6-0 at half time playing wonderful crisp fast soccer on the deck.

Further goals in the second half to king , Sullivan , Faulds and Canny rounded out the double figures. But one of the best goals came from a single strike to blues forward Fellah to keep his excellent scoring form going. In the reserves goals to Lachlan Paterson and Jordan Zuvela cancelled out Joe Ridings penalty as Croatia caused an upset with a 2-1 win over title chasing Wanderers.

This weekend’s games

This weekend’s games see Westland United tackle Wanderers at Dakalanta Park on Saturday. Westlands ran their heart out last weekend in their 1-0 victory over Lions with many of their players filling in for both grades.

One player who has looked comfortable in the A grade surroundings is junior “Turbo” Singh. He keeps the ball very close when dribbling which is a nightmare for full backs and has a superb left foot.

Wanderers had a shocker last week against Croatia in a 10-1 thumping that saw them slip to the bottom of the ladder. Even when they’ve be beaten in games this season their effort has always been there but on the weekend it was non existent with some players just going through the motions.

I’ve seen them play some terrific games this year so they are very capable , Coach McEwan will have to lift them up here. If some Westlands players have to play two games again , I still think they’ll win.

Sunday’s game sees a cracking contest with much improved Steel United hosting title chasing Lions at Magill Park. Steel had the bye last week but in their previous game they had a 2-1 win over Westland United to make it three victory’s in a row.

In that game centre half Mills was outstanding, its not often “Robo “ Mitchell is beaten in the air but Mills held him that day and his partnership with Anthony Fay looks the goods. Joslyn has only been back for four games but already has 7 goals to his name.

Who would bet against him taking out the golden boot , not me. Lions were did everything right last week except put the ball in the net.

They had a plethora of chances but sometimes you get those games and their focus now will be on taking two points away from Magill Park. Kurt Kuchel has fit in nicely at Lions and had his best game last weekend while Carruthers was excellent along side Pyett and Knox in defence. This is a real tough one to pick, might sit on the fence here – a draw.
