The members of Whyalla’s Croatia Soccer Club had a thrilling time watching the World Cup soccer final last week, with about 50 gathering to see the telecast at their clubrooms.
Croatia went down to the French 4-2 in the final, but A Grade coach Sean Sheedy said the atmosphere in the rooms was electric for both of Croatia’s goals.
“Everyone was in their colours. it was great to get down here and support the Croatia boys in the final,” he said.
“It summarised the kind of club we are. We are really welcoming. It was a great environment.”
Mr Sheedy said it was unfortunate that Croatia didn’t win the cup, but praised the French for their fine football.
An own goal by Mario Mandzukic after a controversial free kick gave France a 1-0 lead 18 minutes into the game. Croatia would come back to equalise when Ivan Perisic scored in the 28th minute.
It was all France from there, with superstars Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe scoring to make it 4-1. Perisic atoned for his own goal, scoring in the 69th minute to make it 4-2.
Croatia beat hosts Russia 4-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals and upset England 2-1 in the semi-final to make it to the final.
