The Whyalla City Council has warned the community about a series of scam emails being sent to some residents asking for payment of parking and traffic fines.
Council would like to let all residents and visitors know that it does not issue parking fines or traffic infringement notices via email.
Council IT staff investigated the scam after residents sent in copies of the emails they received.
One claimed to be a parking infringement notice while another claimed to be a traffic infringement for failing to stop at a red light.
It is important that people do not click on these links as they will attempt to download malware onto your computer.
They are generic emails without any identification or City of Whyalla branding. Council believes these emails would be used widely in Australia and possibly worldwide.
For more information and help with these sort of scam emails, there is a Federal Government website https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/ that also has the option of subscribing to email alerts.
If anyone has any further concerns about these emails or other emails that claim to be from the City of Whyalla, please ring Council on 8640 3444 or report them via the My Local Services app or by emailing email@example.com
