Vigil lights up night

Youth aged 9 to 26 years will pay tribute to those who have served our country in times of war and conflict or on peace-keeping missions, by standing guard around the Whyalla Cenotaph for the ANZAC Eve Youth Vigil.

Heather Snowden, Executive Officer for the Whyalla ANZAC Eve Vigil Committee, said the 2018 Vigil will see approximately 40 volunteers participating in the event.

While the youth are forefront, guarding the Cenotaph, leaders and adult helpers are busy providing supervision or carrying out other roles behind the scenes.

In the past youth from a variety of Whyalla-based organisations including St John Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides, Surf Life Saving, Air Force Cadets & Naval Cadets, Stormfront Productions plus CFS Cadets from Cowell, have been involved.

This year the group welcomes members from Whyalla Youth Advisory Council and D’faces of Youth Arts Inc. who are participating for the first time.

This year’s ANZAC Eve Vigil will begin with an opening ceremony commencing at 5:45pm on Tuesday, April 24th at the Whyalla War Memorial located just outside the Memorial Oval gates.

The 1st group of youth will take their posts to begin the Vigil at 6pm.

Groups of youth will then take turns during the following 12-hours to guard the Cenotaph with the final group handing over guard duties to the Whyalla Naval Cadets at 6am on 25th April, just prior to Dawn Service.

The opening ceremony will include a number of Guest Speakers and a Tribute Laying component.

Members of the public are welcome to take part in the Tribute Laying by placing flowers, a wreath, or other items of a suitable symbolic nature (e.g. a club hat or neatly folded shirt featuring their business/organisation logo, etc.) at the base of the Cenotaph.

The ANZAC Eve Vigil holds great value to those who take part as it honours those who have served our country during the First World War and all other wars that have followed.

It provides an opportunity for youth to learn and understand what our Diggers have been through, as well as the opportunity of meeting new people and make new friends in the process.
