Pole almost blows over

Around 1000 Whyalla homes lost power at 7:21pm on Friday night due to damage to a power pole on Racecourse Road.

SA Power Networks spokesperson Paul Roberts said power was restored at 11pm that night. The company then replaced the leaning pole on Saturday morning.

“We’re still investigating the cause, but it’s likely it was caused by high winds and some corrosion on the pole,” he said.

Strong winds battered South Australia on Friday as a cold front moved across the state. The winds whipped up a dust storm which made its way through Whyalla that afternoon.

On Friday afternoon the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds. in the Adelaide Metro, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, Kangaroo Island, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East, Lower South East and parts of West Coast and Flinders districts.

Aside from wind, the strong front was also expected to bring squally showers and thunderstorms with it.
