WARNING: Police have warned the public about internet scams after a man lost $60,000 online.

Police are issuing a warning to the public about online scams, after a man sent a large amount of money to a scammer pretending to be from an online competition on a social media website.

The suspect offered the Whyalla Stuart man multiple prizes, ranging from $5,000 to $2,000,000 in exchange for sending a small fee of several hundred dollars each time to cover courier charges.

The victim has sent the suspect about $60,000 over the past 18 months, and never received any prizes.

Remember that if you feel as though you have been subject to an attempted scam, spread the word among your friends and family; the more informed they are, the less vulnerable to scams they become.

This serves as a timely reminder to all social media users that if something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. If you have any information about potential scams, please report these to the ACORN online reporting service at www.acorn.gov.au
