The Whyalla Show Committee are looking for six new members to join their team and make next year’s show bigger and better than it was before.
The committee are holding an Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, November 21 at 7:30pm at the Whyalla Showgrounds, with the community encouraged to attend.
President Tamy Pond said being a part of the committee was a very physical job that was also very rewarding.
“You get to give back to the community and be proud that you played a part in putting on an event like the Whyalla Show,” she said.
“There’s lots of hands-on work, but many hands make light work. We’re looking for people who have tradesman qualities – we’re lacking a plumber, a carpenter, and a few other trades we rely on out here.”
The committee meets once a month in the main office at the Whyalla Showgrounds. The meeting is held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm and lasts for 90 minutes.
The group also host working bees throughout the year.
“Come showtime we have our setup weekend, the weekend before the Whyalla Show, which you have to give full commitment for,” Ms Pond said.
“You also have to give your full commitment to participating in the Show weekend.”
With the success of the Whyalla Show in 2017, there’s no better time to jump on the committee and help make it even more successful next year.
“We broke a lot of records and came away from the Show feeling extra proud this year. We were able to achieve so much even though we didn’t have a full committee,” Ms Pond said.
“We cannot wait to see what we can achieve with a full committee. We’ve been pulling in a lot of volunteers just to get by. We were very lucky that the Whyalla City Council helped us out this year.” The six positions are on the general committee. Members of the general committee have to serve for at least a year before they can move up to the executive committee. “If you’re a long-term fan of the show, this is a great opportunity to step up.”
