On Tuesday, a nine-hole stableford event played on the back nine was the order of the day for lady golfers in windy conditions with a real chill in the air. The forecast of 17C is not really spring weather, however, the eastern states really copped some extremely cold days.
The winner on the day was Michelle Hart who played exactly to her handicap with a score of 18 stableford points. Hart is handling her new club very proficiently and it is certainly paying dividends.
Kay Freeth and Maree Farr were also in great form, each finishing on 18 points but missing out on a countback. Next in line for a ball in the rundown was Glenda Clayton with a card of 17 points.
Nearest to the pin award on the 18th (second shot for all) was Maree Farr whose ball was just .35 cms from rolling into the hole. In the ball raffle it was Michelle Hart's name drawn out.
Many of our golfers, both male and female, have been competing in the Riverland so numbers have diminished in most of the programmed competition. On Thursday, ladies fronted for the 18 hole stroke competition in ideal golfing conditions - cool to cold with not a breath of wind in which to fight against. Our sponsor this time was the Bay View Hotel who support us on a regular basis. Many thanks for their generosity.
Due to repairs being carried out on the front nine, golfers replayed the back nine (after the initial nine). Some fantastic scores resulted, particularly in Div I.
Maree Farr played her best game event with her score (would you believe) just 65 nett. If that doesn't alter Maree's handicap I fail to see what will. This lass just keeps improving every facet of her game with ease. Kay Freeth was runner-up in Div I with an excellent score of 69. Freeth has enjoyed her time back into golf whilst on long service league and members have loved having her back. The break is over - alas - so Kay will face up to employment once again. Her nett score of 69, however, will be stored in the memory bank for the next break.
Division II was won by Annette Cotter who continues to impress on this occasion carding nett 72. Glenda Clayton was not far off the mark to be runner-up of nett 73.
Marge Nicholls was in fine touch to record 73 to win a ball in the rundown, as did Thelma Murray on nett 74. First time round in the nearest the pin on the 18th saw Marge Nicholls the winner in Div I .98cms from the hole and in Div II Audrey Discombe was close also 1.30 mtrs away (second shot for both grades).
The second time round it was Maree Farr absolute winner in Div I a mere .24cms off the pace while Annette Cotter finished just .37cms from the flag to take the honours in Div II. The lucky ball raffle was won by Annette Cotter.
One of our stalwart lady golfers lost her seven iron on the course recently. Would the finder of same be kind enough to return it to the golf shop. Heather would certainly appreciate its return.
The guys who have given of their time and energy repairing sections of the front nine, your superb effort is much appreciated. Many hands make light work and our course superintendent would welcome offers from more of our members.
A reminder to our ladies that the handicap foursomes programmed previously as Sept 12 will now be played on Tuesday 26th with final entries to be in by Thursday, Sept 21. This will be the final major competition for the winter season. However, other comps in our handbook will proceed as indicated with our end of season closing day and presentation of trophies still undecided.
Marge Herbert (much better), Margaret Lewis ('A' okay), John Lewis (had a crash landing - okay), Garry Branford (coming along well after knee surgery), Carmel Dickeson (getting there)
