Lyn Breuer elected as Provisional Whyalla Mayor

MAYOR: Lyn Breuer.

MAYOR: Lyn Breuer.

The City of Whyalla has a new mayor after Lyn Breuer won the Supplementary Election in a close battle with acting mayor Tom Antonio.

Ms Breuer recorded 3280 votes after preferences with her closest rival, Mr Antonio, receiving 3135.

However Mr Antonio received 2702 first-preference votes while Ms Breuer only received 2689.

Ms Breuer says she is thankful to the Whyalla community.

”There was a very good turnout of people who voted which indicates to me the people of Whyalla are really concerned about Whyalla and Whyalla’s future,” Ms Breuer said.

“I think my previous experience working with state and federal governments and with government departments, companies and with other organisations has helped me.”

Ms Breuer says it was a tight and enthralling contest.

“Tom (Antonio) has certainly had a great deal of publicity over the last few months, I’ve been hiding in the background and so a lot of people thought he was doing a good job which is why he got such a good vote,” she said.

Ms Breuer says she has some major plans when she begins her new role as mayor.

“The first thing we need to do is to be talking to all the bodies involved about the steel industry and the mining industry at Arrium,” she said.

“It’s really important for us to get all the support and mechanisms we need to support the big changes that will happen to our community.”

Councillor Tom Antonio thanked Arrium administrator Mark Mentha, Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, State Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis, and all regional mayors for working with him to ‘forge forward for the future prosperity of Whyalla’.

“I am forever grateful to the people of this city for their support, I am passionately committed to Whyalla and as I have always advocated – closure is not an option for our steelworks,” he said.
