Hoffman shows strength

A cold, windy night for racing at the velodrome didn’t stop riders participating with continued good numbers in minis and juniors’ groups.

In seniors, Lucas Hoffman was back showing his fitness and strength to power away in the early races. It was Kelvin Rohrlach who fought hard and won a three-lap handicap race – he’s in good form.

Jonah Mislov (U17) had a stunning night keeping pressure on both Lucas and Kelvin with Troy Brougham in close quarters. Cooper Jacobs (also U17) was in the mix and had the ride of his life, always with a smile on his face.

There was a good variety of senior races with handicap, scratch and Olympic sprints.  A motor paced event called a Kieren was conducted being the first time for some groups where the start is together and once in position behind the motor bike, it takes concentration to keep this steady pace which gradually increases until 2.5 laps to go and then sprint for the finish.

The power and fitness of Lucas Hoffman couldn’t be held back, a real power machine. In all grades it proved great competition and especially with the U15 group with a 1.5 sprint lap it was Quenby Schmidt who tactically set up her sprint and powered away to win and finish the night’s competition.

Thanks to Darryl Worby for being commissaire relieving Matt Stanton for the night and Wayne Gibson helping with handicaps and Keith Gibson junior coach. Keith said “it was a good night although bitter cold winds may have hampered some riders but all riders experience the same conditions”.

He also commented that there was some room for improvement on fitness for Amalia Evans and Dylan Stanton. The close competition between Macy Brougham, Riegan Stanton, Ashlyn Evans was fun to watch with Leiyah Hodgkinson keeping pressure on.

With commitment from Jack Wisbey and Quenby Schmidt it was fun and furious competition with Clinton Schmidt adding to this mix. A small group of U11 with Jett Taylor, Will Thompson and Jai Azzopardi kept the heat on and tried hard all night.

With six groups of mini juniors a great way for family to get involved running alongside these children encouraging them ride over the finish line rather than stop before it!

Come along and check out the fun each Friday night starting at 6.30pm – canteen and bar facilities available.
