Looking for a chance to get up close and personal with our local dolphins without getting too wet?
Dolphin Treasure Kayak and SUP Board Hire will be putting up a display at the Sundowner Tourist and Cabin Park as part of Pride Week, giving anyone looking to try out kayaking all the information they need to get started.
The display, featuring all kayaks/SUP paddle boards and other equipment, will be available on October 25 from 2pm to 4pm.
Everyone who attends will be given a loyalty card with two of five sessions stamped, equating to a free hour out in the water in your choice of kayak or paddle board.
Flyers, free stickers and stubby holders for half price will also be available on the day.
Business owner Sonny Phillis said Whyalla’s dolphins were the city’s best-kept secret.
“Our good-natured dolphins not only reside along our foreshore and marina, but have enough curiosity to come right up to you for a closer look,” he said.
“Not only is the customers safety our number one priority, but so is the safety and well-being of marine life. With kayaks being non-powered vessels, they’re a great way to enjoy the dolphin’s company.
“We do not promote feeding or touching the dolphins, but being as curious as they are, you are more than likely to get a surprise visit when you least expect it so you can sit there and enjoy their presence.”
Dolphin Treasure Kayak and SUP Board Hire currently offers the hire of 13 x single seat kayaks, 2 x 2.5 seat kayaks and 2 x stand up paddle boards. The 2.5 seat kayaks cater for two adults and a single child.
“Before we hire out new equipment we review the risk assessment, emergency response plan and hire agreement to ensure customers are fully aware of the kayaking operation and safety procedures,” Mr Phillis said.
“I would like to thank the local council, fisheries, Whyalla Sea Rescue and the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group for their full support on this venture to help put Whyalla on the map.”
Mr Phillis will also be setting up a stall as part of Pride in the Park on October 21, with everything available at the Pride Week stall on offer there. Pride Week is organised by Advancing Whyalla.
