In the latest move for Whyalla’s former ‘Ten-pin Toddler’, Tarkyn Percy has made the Junior State Team in the number 1 spot.

He will be competing in the 2018 Junior President’s Shield in Vicotria against bowling talent from around Australia.

Tarkyn had to prove his worth in a number of intense Junior President’s  Shield Roll Offs against other talented bowlers, and by the end of day 2 he posted the best score of 3073.

It’s a big step in his career, which began at the ripe age of 2 years.

“It feels really good to be selected for this team. I think New South Wales will be the toughest competition for us as a team,” Tarkyn said.

“It should be a tough challenge for South Australia.”

Tarkyn has been busy competing in tournaments around South Australia in preparation for the competition, finishing third on the SA Junior Youth Circuit in Noarlunga and fourth in Salisbury.

He practices every Wednesday and Thursday, and says targeting is key when preparing to bowl. Tarkyn said it took him around three years to hone his technique, with help from his coach Michael Tran and stepfather Marty Roughsedge.

Tarkyn uses a two-handed technique when he bowls, something he learnt from a young age and has continued to use throughout his bowling career.

James Holland, Alex Berlemon, Kyle Slater, Liam Hannam, Josh Keen-Copland and Shannon Wallis make up the rest of the state team.

Tarkyn’s family will also be looking for support from the community as they aim to fund his trips to Adelaide.

He will be participating in a number of tournaments and training sessions in the lead up to the event, incurring significant travel and accommodation costs.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring Tarkyn for his trip, you can contact his mother Briony on 0434 799 946.
