Whyalla and Port Augusta writers combine for food anthology

There is a story behind every meal and an experience to be shared in every recipe.

This is the literary mixture proposed by the Whyalla Writers’ Group and Port Augusta Writers for a food anthology, Recipes for Living.

They are searching far and wide for ingredients which could also include pictures by Whyalla News cartoonist Stephen Stanley. Anyone with a taste for writing and food is asked to join Stephen, Anne Cunningham and John O’Shea for an information session at the Whyalla library at 6pm on Thursday, June 1.

“A person could write something about how they changed their lifestyle and what they eat and make it entertaining,” Anne said.

Anne will bring her talents to task – she has previously written a story for the children’s book, Cuttlefish Joe.

Stephen is better known for his humourous forays in the pages of the newspaper, but admits to having some specialties as a chef.

“I always come back with the ‘tried-and-true’ dishes,” he said.

“My story is going to be about herbs and spices. It is all about the secret recipes.”

John said he planned a contribution based on adults living with attention-deficit disorder with ingredients to suit.

He will also write about living in the Port Augusta-Whyalla area. “I didn’t know I could write 18 months ago. It would have been the last thing I thought of,” he said.

“I have gone through a change. It is all part of my new life.”

Submissions are invited for the book. Contributors must be a financial member of either group.  The maximum length for contributions is 1000 words, either as prose or poetry, and must be submitted as a Word file to Stephen Stanley at stansei@bigpond.com by September 1 together with a short biography of the contributor and preferably a photograph.  Contributions may be edited for length and formatting. 

If you have a completed piece for inclusion, please feel free to submit it prior to the deadline, and also contact us if you have any queries, or special requests about your submission. 

There will be some form of illustration throughout the anthology (although the exact nature is yet to be determined) possibly on the theme of food or cooking, and we also invite interest in submitting items either as artwork or photographs. Please refer to a copy of the Whyalla Writers’ Group 2016 anthology, Where The Outback Meets The Sea, for the size and style of the 2017 anthology.  

Whyalla Writers’ Group will hold an information session on Thursday, June 1, at 6pm at the library. Please email Mr Stanley at stansei@bigpond.com so he can share any updates. A workshop will be on July 6 at 6pm, also at the library.​
