VIGILANT: Youth are being encouraged to join this year's youth-based vigil which will be hosted by the Whyalla Anzac Eve Vigil Committee.

The 2017 Whyalla Anzac Eve Vigil Committee is putting a call out for young people to join this year’s youth-based vigil.

In the spirit of Anzac tradition, young people aged 10 years and over will stand guard at the Whyalla War Memorial located just outside the Memorial Oval gates, rotating in shifts from 6pm Anzac Eve until 6am Anzac Day.

Heather Snowden, Executive Officer for the Vigil Committee, says the committee would ‘like to see as many young people as possible’ take part in the event.

Last year’s event saw youth members from Whyalla St John Cadets, 2nd and 4th Whyalla Scout Groups, Whyalla Venturer Scout Unit, Cowell CFS Cadets, Whyalla Girl Guides and Whyalla Naval Cadets get involved.

However, the committee hopes to attract a wider cross section of the community to join them this year.

The Anzac Eve Vigil is broken down into two main parts. The “Opening Proceedings” including speeches and a Tribute Laying ceremony will begin at 5:45pm, and the Vigil ceremony itself which will commence at 6pm.

Any sporting groups, community groups or individuals interested in taking part in the Anzac Eve Vigil are welcome to join in; however, all participants in the main Vigil must be registered members of a youth-based organisation.

General members of the public are welcome to participate in the Tribute Laying.

“Participation in this event places youth in an environment away from their comfort zones where they are thinking about the sacrifices of others, rather than about themselves,” Ms Snowden said.

“It is also a great opportunity to meet other people they wouldn’t otherwise associate with and make new friends.”

Those wishing to be involved in the Vigil are required to register with the Whyalla Anzac Eve Vigil Committee ASAP as consent forms, insurance paperwork, National Police Clearance (if over 18 years old), etc. needs to be finalised and submitted no later than Friday, April 21.

Once registrations are received a roster will be put together to maintain the vigil through the night.

Anyone just wishing to take part in the Tribute Laying can just show up on 24th April. Tributes may be in the form of flowers, a wreath, an item featuring organisation logo (e.g. Hat or neatly folded club top), etc.
