The Whyalla Bowling Club held another successful three-day bowling tournament over the Easter weekend.
Bowlers came from Moa, Christies Beach, Reynella, Gladstone, Pt Pirie, BHAS, ETSA, Clare, Cowell and Whyalla Golf to compete in fours, pairs and singles competitions, with many players staying in town for the whole three days.
In ideal bowls conditions 14 teams competed in the fours competition on the Friday, and after the three games the final placings were:
- Winners on 88 points were B. McKenna, J.McKenna, D. Moffatt and R.Hall (Christies Beach)
- Runners up were T.Brewster, S.King, D.Warner, and T.Thompson (ETSA) with 84 pts
- In third place on a countback was the Whyalla Golf team of C.Everett, B.Smale, C. Schrapel and M.Treloar, on 83pts.
On Saturday 24 teams of pairs competed, again in ideal conditions, and after three games of ten ends the final positions were decided by the shortest of margins.
Eventual winners were C.Schrapel and B.Smale from Whyalla Golf (80pts), with the Pt Pirie pairing of K.Franks and M.Traeger runners up (79 pts), and in third place another Whyalla Golf Team of C.Everett and G.Stringer (78pts).
The final day of play was the Singles, with 32 players involved in a knockout competition to decide the eventual winner and runner up, plus the losers of the first round continued in a knockout plate competition.
Again the weather was kind, and there were many good games before the eventual finalist were decided.
“The final day of play was the Singles, with 32 players involved in a knockout competition to decide the eventual winner and runner up, plus the losers of the first round continued in a knockout plate competition.”
In the Plate competition C.Schrapel (Whyalla Golf) ran out the winner, with B.McKenna (Christies Beach) the runner up. In the main singles final the Easter Champion for 2017 was T.Brewster (ETSA), who defeated G.Pycroft (Whyalla) in a hard fought final, with the final score of 21 to 14 not a true indication of the tight final game. The Whyalla Bowling Club thanks its sponsors (Reg Parker Building Services, Westland Hotel and Chemart) for their support of this event, and all the players involved which enabled another successful three day competition.
