VICTORIAN pacer Melpark Major confirmed his standing as the rising star of the Australasian Grand Circuit with a record-breaking Victoria Cup win at Moonee Valley on Saturday night.

The Alan Tubbs-trained and Amy Tubbs-driven five-year-old held the lead from the inside barrier and an early speed burn resulted in him breaking the lead-time record for the 2575-metre staying trip.

Melpark Major, a luckless second in the Miracle Mile at Harold Park after racing wide throughout, then reeled off a mile rate of 1 minute 55.8 seconds to take half a second off the track record.

"He copped a bit of early pressure and that got him pulling very hard," said Amy Tubbs, who joined Natalie Rasmussen as the only women to have driven the winner of the Victoria Cup.

"But when we came around the home bend and everybody was getting a little bit tired but we were still in front, I just threw everything at him and he was able to get there. He's just a legend."

Rasmussen partnered her three-time Interdominion winner Blacks A Fake in the Victoria Cup but it was never a factor in a race dominated by the leader and those trailing him on the inside.

Kiwi Gotta Go Cullen was second after trailing Melpark Major throughout, with outsider Mister Swinger third.

The Miracle Mile winner, the Peter Rixon-trained NSW pacer Divisive, failed to figure after Rixon opted out of a battle for the lead at the start.

Despite running the first two quarters in 28.7s and 30.9s, Melpark Major still had the audacity to run the final sectionals in 28.1s and 28.3s to score by two metres.

"This is just amazing," Tubbs said. "I'll never forget this as long as I live. He's just a marvellous horse."
