Nine members of the Whyalla Rifle Club travelled to Port Augusta to compete with the Port Augusta and Port Pirie teams in the Annual Pepsi Cola Shield event.
Rules for this shoot are fairly laid back and whichever team has the least number of competitors, that is the amount of scores to count, meaning the more you have the better off you are.
As it turned out Port Augusta had eight, Pirie had six only, so a six best scores to count was the order of the day.
After the first round has been completed (double 600 yards) Pirie had gained the upper hand, but Port Augusta and Whyalla came back hard as always until unfortunately for Whyalla a shooter has his finger on the trigger to soon and a miss was recorded.
Five points gone in one hit, and as a result Whyalla finished third.
The said shooter was really grief stricken by the incident and yes it was unfortunate, but hopefully a lesson was learned and it won't happen again.
In the off rifle section it was Pirie with 575.43 from Port Augusta 573.37 and Whyalla 568.41.
The handicap section saw Port Augusta triumphant with 600/600 using 53% from Pirie 600/600 98.8% and Whyalla 598.3/600 top scores for their individual clubs were - Jake Stauwer (Pirie) 98.13/100, Mick Purtill (Whyalla) 98.9/100 and Ian Noll Port Augusta 98.7/100.
