Whyalla will be out to restore its pride in combined football when it plays off in the Spencer Gulf League at Port Augusta on Saturday.
Whyalla's recent combined form hasn't been good, with losses to Eastern Eyre last year and this year to Port Lincoln, while its form in the Mortlock Shield is nothing to write home about.
In the past three years of competing they have won only two of nine games played.
The current crop of Whyalla players will be out to redeem themselves and maybe start a little history for themselves by winning and getting that pride back in the red, white and blue of Whyalla.
The selectors have chosen a well balanced side with the forwards being the main focal point, with sharp shooters Shannon Winders, Reggie Reid and Brad Smith all being in the squad.
Between them they have kicked 86 goals in the local competition and if they can carry that form into the game they will cause the strong SGL defence a few headaches.
The rucks are strong with Ben English in great form while Justin Grund is probably in the best form of his career.
If anything happens to them Ray McIntosh can act as back up.
Whyalla's defence could be its strong point with Matthew Perry at fullback with Wayne Dare, who had a great game against Lincoln, Chris Beaty, Kane Grund, Anthony Manfield, Adrian Huish and Phil Hillman are all capable of shutting out the opposition.
The mid fielders are all in great form, with Leigh Symons, Scott Norman, Ryan Baker, Mick Kellett, Luke Seymour, Luke Hastings and Ryan Burgess all capable of running the opposition off its legs and giving the forwards plenty of the ball.
The forwards will be chosen from Damien Hanneman, Brad Henderson, McIntosh (if not needed in the ruck), Waylon Nielsen, Dwayne Colson, Simon Nowak and Alistair Thomas, as well as those mentioned previously in Winders, Smith and Reid.
If they are given any latitude a big score may be the order of the day.
While I know very little about the SGL team, looking at their squad they appear to be very strong with Elijah Ware, Norm Wombat, Matt Gale, Darren Shillabeer, Brock Laube, Nick Callary (a former Whyalla boy), Joe Quigley, Jordan Warren and Ray Stapleton all featuring in the best players week after week.
Whyalla in the past has always had players pull out at the last moment, but if we can put our best or near to our best team on the field, we definitely will be in their with a good showing.
I firmly believe we are as good as any other league or association going around at the moment.
Our only injury worries at the moment are Greg Fiebig with a slight leg strain, Gavin Jonker (knee) and Gary Hoffman (ankle).
I am probably a little parochial, but I am selecting Whyalla to come out on top in what I believe will be a great contest by 10 to 15 points.
