Final opportunity for table tennis

09 Mar, 2010 11:05 AM
The Whyalla Table Tennis Association has given until this Friday as the deadline for players to be part of its winter season competition.

The club will be open this coming Wednesday and Friday night for final nominations at its Jubilee Park Stadium.

Any standard, any age, male or female are eligible to compete.

With an excellent response to its players registration night a couple of weeks ago, there is still room for players to register to take part.

There is a lift in female players this year, with the numbers seeming to fall over the last ten years, I personally could not get a seat in the clubroom, close to the canteen, as the ladies had taken it over, which is wonderful to see.

Table Tennis is one of the very few sports where player numbers are not a problem.

Teams can be made from three players to unlimited numbers, as long as the club has enough tables and nights to play on.

Last Friday saw many newly registered players come to try their game against seasoned seniors and juniors, allowing the club to grade the new ones into a playing position where it feels comfortable, then during the winter season can be moved up or down depending on their ability.

Juniors are looking good, with many newly signed members.

This is the area where the club needs to place a lot of its time, so the numbers can be retained for many years.

The other fine aspect of this season, is the number of parents becoming involved, helping the kids by staying in the clubrooms while they practise or while being graded.

The new surroundings certainly help this, with fine meals and canteen section, plus the glass viewing section, an excellent way of mixing with other parents, and members.

The Club has secured two Whyalla business's as sponsors of Junior Table Tennis, thanks go out to Greg Boston from The Car Bath at Westlands, also Malcolm McLeod at McLeod's Motor Company Essington Lewis Avenue, who will sponsor shirts for all juniors, plus have naming right to all junior advertising and Whyalla News write ups.
