Drivers take on titles

04 Mar, 2010 09:29 AM

About 20 Whyalla Car Club drivers will make the journey to Roxby Downs this coming weekend, February 6 and 7, to contest the first round of the 2010 Dirt Circuit State Championship.

This round will be split into two days of racing with practice starting on Saturday, February 6 at 12pm to 4pm, then racing two rounds start at 7pm.

On Sunday, the racing will start at 12pm, to conclude the event followed by the all comers races, with the host club to present a barbecue tea, followed by trophy presentations.

Three classes will be contested by the Whyalla drivers and six have nominated for Modifieds, seven in the Street Stocks and five in the Open wheelers.

All of the nominees are experienced contenders at this level, with the exception of Justin Moore, who, after winning the class title last season has proven he is a strong contender.

Modifieds will be represented by Chris Pickert in his newly repaired All Wheel Drive machine, Trevor Driver in another AWD vehicle, Geoff Pickert in the sometimes reliable Holden V8 VW, Josh Pickert in his newly repaired supercharged Commodore and reigning Modifieds Club Champion Ian Ellis in his Falcon.

Added to this class will be James Priestley in his super fast Ford Taurus and Stacy Harris in his V8 Torana.

Several of these drivers have already had their name inscribed on the Champions trophy in the past, so familiarity with this standard of racing should not be an unusual experience.

All of the named are very capable of good performances at any level.

In the Street Stock class all of the nominated drivers are again capable of challenging the best and all have recently shown a good turn of speed at the Whyalla opening meeting of the season.

Barry Pickert, Adrian Jones, Matt Ashman and Billy Woollatt are all performing at their best, while Simon Moore, Alan Kirkwood, Brett Walden and the earlier mentioned Justin Moore will always give a good account of themselves at any level and will certainly accumulate a good number of points.

The Open wheelers will be represented in both A and B grade with the always very fast Kevin Smith intending to make a serious challenge after a virtual rebuild of his car, that is already showing promise, and continuing to prove his title of Track Outright Record holder at the Whyalla track is no fluke.

Richard Tapley and Paul McKay are both much improved drivers and will challenge for contention in the B grade division along with Arnie Weir.

A large number of spectators will also make the trip to witness the spectacular racing that Title events always presents and both drivers and spectators alike will be hoping for a dry track for the entire weekend, before embarking on the long trip home on Monday.
