Bowls season in full swing

10 Dec, 2009 08:44 AM

Heat has caused some of the club's competition games for season 2009/10 to be postponed, but now the Tournament Committee is pleased all games are back on schedule.

The club's mixed pairs was played early in October and the winners were Sylvia and Bill Nelson.

Club triples was won by Cath Young, Gai Travers and skipper Wendy Schwerdt, who will now play in the Champ of Champs at the host club Whyalla on Wednesday, December 16.

Runners up were the team of Irene Karavas, Gert Martin, Ann Buckley (sub) and skipper Raelene Birdseye.

Club fours winners were Pat Hannan (skipper), Rita Jones, Dawn McKeough and Elva Cuddihy.

Playing in the Champ of Champs, they were narrowly beaten on percentage by a team from Whyalla Bowling Club.

Dec Ring's team will now play in the Regional Champ of Champs at Laura in March.

The Regional Carnival that should have been held in November was cancelled because of the excessive heat and will hopefully be rescheduled in April 2010.

Two players from Whyalla Golf Bowling club, Pat Hannan and Helen Smith were chosen to represent the Upper North Region Three at the Women's Prestige Medley, held at the Payneham Bowling Club last week.

Although they played exceptionally well, teams from the metropolitan clubs took out the shield.

Trials for the Country Round Robin team will be held at the Golf Bowling Club on Friday, December 11.

Players selected will travel to Adelaide in February 2010.

Pennants have only had one game cancelled due to the heat and after seven rounds, Golf Blue is leading in top spot and Golf Red is fourth.

The last game of pennants before Christmas will be played on December 17 and bowls commences after the New Year on January 5.

Prossers Night Bowls starts on Tuesday, January 5 and once again full greens are expected with 24 teams entering the competition.

Selection has been made for the InterAssociation Round Robin, which will be played at the Jamestown Bowling Club on January 19, with players selected from both Whyalla and Whyalla Golf Bowling Clubs taking part.
