Racing mates off the streets

26 Aug, 2009 11:30 PM
Once again local rev-heads took to the eight-mile drag track for the third Race Your Mates event.

There were 58 entries on Sunday at the Steel City Drag Club event, including about 10 Adelaide racers and others from around the region.

More than 300 spectators turned out for the day, which club president Pete Datson said was more than he anticipated.

"It was a good day actually, everything went smooth, good crowd," he said.

Fortunately there were no crashes, but plenty of donuts in the burn out competition.

The increasingly popular event has been dubbed a safer avenue for hoon drivers, but is also a good learning tool for youngsters.

For 12-year-old Bailey Datson it was his first drag meet, and he plans to compete in upcoming meets.

He said the drags were fun and it was a good way to learn how to drive.

Datson said anyone eight years or older was eligible to race and the club was always looking for new racers, members and help to run race meets.

He said all the drivers at Race Your Mates were potential racers and should consider competing this drag season.

The first meet for the season is set to take off this October 24 which is planned to be a big meet, and will include for the first time the extreme outlaw class and racers from Alice Springs.

The club will hold another Race Your Mates event on December 11.
