Karts expecting stong field

22 Jul, 2009 11:30 PM
The Whyalla Go Kart Club will hold its fourth 2009 race meeting at the Mount Young Raceway, Lincoln Highway (near Jenkins Avenue) this Sunday.

Event organisers expect a strong field of both junior and senior karters during the open race meet.

The club has experienced a significant surge in local membership and race competitors since hosting the South Australian Open Championship in November 2008.

Membership has increased by more than 400 percent in the past six months since the event.

Expected to race well on Sunday is Josh Angus, who will be fresh from competing at Bolivar from the previous weekend as he did during the June local race meet.

Also competing at the June meet, was Ben Redjepi who will keep the pressure on Angus and make for close and competitive tussle.

The class will also include local drivers Codii Kaesler and Jayden Hanely who competed in his first race in June and showed considerable potential.

Club members Joel Oliver from Roxby Downs and Cameron and Georgina Wilson from Orroroo will also compete within the field, all of whom have proven to be contenders during local March and May race meets, respectively.

Karting has become widely regarded as a sport that has a wide number of benefits for younger drivers.

The sport teaches the youngsters about car control and driving techniques well before they are old enough to obtain their road licence.

It is these principles that has assisted Whyalla's junior karters after the club received funding from the Whyalla City Council Community Grants.

Funding has been provided to assist in the costs associated with junior karters obtaining race licenses, and has already assisted in increasing competitor numbers.

The club is grateful for the council funding and the opportunities it presents in developing local youth in kart related skills, knowledge, achievements, and social interaction.

Visiting Adelaide karters are also expected to compete in the junior classes, which will make for entertaining racing.

Senior racing is expected to include National J, Sportsman SA and 125 restricted classes with recent meets showing an increase in competitors in each class.

Sportsman SA is expected to see the highest number of competitors with local member Robbie McKenzie expected to continue his form from rounds in the Festival State Cup and local May race meet where he won all five races.

Brothers Adam and Jeff Redjepi will no doubt be formidable competitors, with Jeff having won a placing in March, May and June race meets.

Port Augusta karter Daniel Tasanen will be back after crashing heavily in the March meeting.

Orroroo driver Iian Wilson has previously competed interstate, but will be racing in Whyalla for the first time.

This class has the potential to see more than 10 karters compete and will no doubt provide value for spectators.

The restricted 125cc is a class consisting of karts with higher powered motors and supreme tyre performance with intense, tight and precise driving guaranteed.

Local members Shannon James, Alex Hill and Craig Smith provided entertainment during the May race meet and will be joined by experienced karter Grant McClure from Adelaide.

Local senior driver Brian Maitland will also be competing and will no doubt be a serious challenger after winning three races at the June race meet.

This event will give Whyalla residents a taste of this thrilling sport prior to hosting a round of the Festival State Cup on September 12 and 13.

Competitors from all over the State are expected to attend and race for their respective class honours.

Gates open at 9am, practice commences at 9.30am and racing starts at 10am.

Spectators and interested karters are most welcome with free entry.
