This Saturday, May 9, will see the local Steel City Drag Club celebrating its 40th birthday with and end of season race meeting.
Followed by a dinner for both current and previous members and competitors, the meeting will be the last for the season.
The meet also doubles as the final round of the Steel City Charlie Dennis points series, which has attracted many competitors over the year.
With plenty of statewide entries and an additional interstate contingent, the high participant numbers and strong contenders will make this meeting an unmissable highlight of the season.
Adelaide's Super Street racer Kylie Wagener leads the overall point score in the series by a small margin, with four racers tied in second position.
Any one of these five drivers could walk away with the overall win for the season series, so the battle for first place will be fierce.
Each of these five competitors are also battling it out for their respective bracket lead.
A number of cars will be entered into a Pro Modified bracket, with sedan and dragster vehicles of up to 1600 horsepower (equivalent to one and a half Formula One cars).
Local driver Graham Shiell will be out to improve his runner-up position from the last meeting.
The ANDRA (Australian National Drag Racing Association) racing format used in 'Group 3' drag competition, known as 'dial your own', means that individual drivers nominate their own handicap.
Failure to meet these goal times affects the outcome, while the system allows the chance of winning overall to be spread equally among all competitors - regardless of bracket or vehicle.
The Super Sedan and Modified brackets will see highly modified production sedans and purpose built race cars hitting the track, powered by motors boasting 400 to 800 horsepower.
These cars will cover the 200-metre sprint in around 6.99 to 5 seconds and even quicker, with speeds starting at 140km/h and skyrocketing to around 200km/h.
With entries still not yet finalised, a high number of entries have already been received in most brackets.
The most popular racer bracket is Super Street, which will feature over 40 competitors, and the Super Sedan bracket currently looking at around 20 entries.
Motorbike fans will have the chance to watch the competition in that bracket, with approximately 10 entries a week prior to the event.
Kids are not forgotten in the event, with a Junior Dragster bracket available for eight to 17 year olds.
These cars have an exceptional ET limit that would easily leave any V8 from HSV or FPV in second place over the 200 metres.
For a full day of entertainment, head down to the Steel City track on Mullaquana Road this Saturday, where the time trials start at 10am, and racing will be held from 2pm until approximately 8pm.
Admission is $15 for adults, with accompanied children under 15 admitted free.
If interested competitors are seeking entry forms, contact Peter on 0448 014 322 or Mandy on 0417 806 928. Steel City's website also has downloadable entry forms, which can be found at www.steelcitydrags.com, and entries being accepted on the day.
