The 2010 Marty Pudney Memorial Hockey Tournament was successfully held last weekend in beautiful weather conditions, with the cooler temperatures being a welcome relief for players.

The hockey tournament featured eight hockey teams including Hummock Hill, Steel City and Stuart from Whyalla, Adelaide Uni, Forestville Blue, Forestville White and North East Zulus from Adelaide and Roxby Downs Hockey Team participating in an action packed display of hockey.

Games were played in a round-robin format and modified to seven-a-side teams playing two 10 minute halves.

An impressive total of 29 hockey games were showcased during the weekend, with about 100 players competing in memory of Marty.

Spectators were treated to some entertaining hockey and a great atmosphere.

There were certainly many talented players showing their great hockey skills during the tournament and the event was also a perfect opportunity to promote our friendly Whyalla hospitality and the sport of hockey.

Visiting teams and locals enjoyed a great weekend with most eagerly looking forward to returning next year.

At the end of 29 games, a tight leaderboard showed only a couple of points separating the top few teams and a place in the finals was up for grabs.

Sunday, March 7 saw the culmination of the tournament with the final played between Adelaide sides Forestville Blue and Forestville White with Forestville Blue coming out the winners of the 2010 Marty Pudney Memorial Cup with the final score being 5-0.

The presentation saw one of Marty's brothers Mal Pudney present the winning Cup to Scott Warming of Forestville Blue.

Other award winners of the weekend tournament received a commemorative bottle of wine.

Message from Mrs Jen Pudney

This year marks the sixth time the annual tournament has been played in remembrance of Martin Pudney, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 30, in a camping trip tragedy in 2005.

Marty was a keen hockey player who began playing hockey with the local Hummock Hill team, then moved to Adelaide for study and joined the Adelaide University side, becoming heavily involved with playing and coaching.

Adelaide University Hockey Club co-ordinate the Marty Pudney Scholarship Fund which is awarded annually to a first year hockey player.

The chosen recipient is usually from a country area and deemed to be an outstanding contributor to the club both on and off the field.

This year, a cheque for $500 was presented to the president of Adelaide Uni Hockey Club Tim Collin, to go toward the Marty Pudney Scholarship Fund.

The Pudney family, together with the organizers of the tournament would like to gratefully thank all the players, supporters and wonderful volunteers over the weekend for their contribution in making this event such a success.

Thank you also to the Whyalla Hockey Association for their invaluable assistance.

Special thanks to the out-of-town hockey teams and their families who travelled to Whyalla for the weekend, your efforts and participation in this special hockey tournament are very much appreciated.
