Cold day of golf

01 Jul, 2009 11:30 PM
Most lady golfers were well and truly rugged up for the 18 hole qualifying stroke event, which was in fact named after a former champion Whyalla golfer in Pat O'Brien.

It was Pat's wish that this event would be in the form of "match play", from the first round after qualifying as the only other match of this type is the Laurel Wreath.

The day was sponsored by Beaurepaires to whom we are grateful.

There was a good roll-up of golfers in attendance for the event.

In division one it was Glenda Davies who came in with the best nett score to take the honours (being 70 nett).

Davies is a long hitter and prepared to take risks, which is certainly a requisite of a top golfer.

Her enthusiasm is very refreshing.

Division two saw Ilona Hansen simply blitz the field with a superb nett 68 to her credit.

This classy score saw her handicap plummet from 31-29.

This lass has taken to golf like a duck takes to water.

Others to break their handicap were Jenny Pollock 29-28 and Glenda Davies 27-26.

Ball winners on the day were: Jenny Pollock nett 71, Sharon Poole 73, Audrey Discombe 74, Jean Brown 77 and Margaret Lewis 78 on a countback from Beverley Shiell, Johanna Gogan and Raelene Foubister.

A playing partner in Margaret Lewis having started on the back nine scored 45 off the stick and looked set to smash her handicap.

However her game fell away on the front nine for no apparent reason.

This steady and determined golfer still managed to score in the ball count.

Lewis also scored the McLeod Motors Award for her second shot on the 18th (ntp) with her putt only a smidgen from the hole.

Ilona Hansen won JD's voucher for her accurately placed drive on the seventh.

Golf ladies braved the freezing cold windy conditions on Tuesday for a nine hole stableford competition.

The weather did not deter several of our ladies from having a great round.

Best on the day was Audrey Discombe who amassed 20 stableford points.

Next in line was Thelma Murray 19 points, Beverley Shiell 19, Raelene (Raz) Foubister 18 and Glenda Davies also 18.

The first round of the Pat O'Brien match play will be on Tuesday, June 30; second round July 14 then the next round decided from contestants remaining due to many involved in entering for open country week, which takes precedent over home competitions.

Many of or ladies intend participating in the "Kimba Picnic Day" on Tuesday, July 7.

It is many years since our ladies have made the "short" trip so some old friendships will be rekindled.
