Whyalla win three from four

21 May, 2008 09:47 AM
Whyalla won three of the four games played against Eastern Eyre in Cowell on Saturday, ensuring the future of Whyalla football is looking good, but lost the league game by 15 points, which was played in blustery conditions.

The first game of the day’s four, was the under 13s, which Whyalla won by 16 points.

It was close all game, with the majority of the scoring at the northern end, which was favored by a three to four goal wind all day.

It was a first class game, with plenty of action and good team work, with Ciaran Hollingworth-Hughes best for Whyalla, with other good players being Michael Baker, Matthew Harding, Brandon Dix and Jacob Munn.

The second game, the under 15s, was much closer, with Whyalla outlasting the opposition to win by six points, the final scores being 9.8 to 7.14.

It was a very tight contest all game, with Ben Sawford being the outstanding player, kicking four goals, with other good players being Luke Hastings, J.J. DeBeer, David Shaw, Matthew Kirchner and Michael Wallace.

The third game, the under 17s, was a one-sided affair with Whyalla easily winning by 63 points.

Whyalla was in complete control from the outset, leading by a massive 58 points at quarter time, with the dominant players for a very impressive Whyalla team being Fraser Marshall, Cameron Edey, Aaron Byles, Nathan Covino and Nathan Grzona, and the major goal kickers being Aaron Byles, Matthew Holmes and Cameron Edey, all kicking three apiece.

The league game began disastrously for Whyalla, with Eastern Eyre, aided by a three to four goal breeze, getting off to a flying start, kicking four goals, within the first 15 minutes played, then kicking one on the siren to lead by 32 points at the break.

Whyalla got back into the game in the second quarter, reducing the margin to nine points at the long break, with gun full forward, Nick Prokopec being a target in the forward line.

Whyalla kept with the opposition early in the last quarter, but Eastern Eyre took control in the latter stages, increasing their lead to 26 points at the last break and if not for their inaccuracy, could have led by a lot more.

Whyalla fought back well early in the last stanza, to get within a goal, but the opposition steadied and with the aid of a few confusing decisions by a certain umpire, they ran out winners by 14 points in the end, the final scores being 12.16 to 11.8.

Whyalla’s best players with Kane Grund at centre half back, who was the proverbial rock of Gibraltar in defence.

Full forward Nick Prokopec was a focal point in the goal front, kicking five goals with other good players being Chad Clothier, Gavin Jonker, Brad Page, Leigh Symonds and Kode Patterson.
