West stands as league favourite

27 May, 2008 02:04 PM
Premiership favourite versus premiership contender and it was worthy of a grand final.

South jumped out of the blocks to jump the Dragons and led early by 19 points.

Peter Jackson was marking everything and South were winning the close in balls, something which was missing from their previous encounter.

But West, as they would prove a number of times, fought back with two late goals to Henderson to go in 20 points down at quater time.

The second quarter started with 100 gamer Gavin Jonker goaling on the run from the pocket to give the Demons the start they wanted.

Scott Maitland and Reggie Reid were enjoying each others company and the game started to heat up.

A Simon Nowak goal from a free kick kept West in touch and all of a sudden the tide started to turn.

Some quick exchange of handballs resulted in a Scott Norman goal and West were within two sausage rolls.

A few errors started to creep into the game, not by poor disposal, but because of the pressure both teams were putting on each other.

South were under siege but Ray McIntosh, as he always does, stood up and produced some magic to set up Ryan Baker who as always never wastes a disposal and found Ed Wilson, who kicked true to steady the Demons and give them a 10-point lead at half time.

South come out after the break on fire, with some Ray McIntosh magic and Reg Reid strength resulting in a strong Peter Jackson grab and goal.

Reg Reid then kicked a goal Fernando Torres would be happy with to give the Dees a commanding 24-point lead.

From the centre break Bevan Doolan showed some blistering pace and split the West defence apart and kicked a goal on the run from 30 metres.

The Dragons, as they had done all day stepped up, Leigh Symons and Russell Sawford lifted in the centre, Brad Henderson was winning at centre half forward and big Harland wasn’t getting any smaller up forward.

West grabbed a couple back to trail by two goals at three quarter time.

The Dragons come out full of run and Brad Smith, who was quiet all day, popped up to put the Dragons within three points.

Russell Sawford was getting too much space at the ball ups and after some good work Cody Patterson, who was doing a good job on South skipper Ryan Baker, goaled on the run to put the Dragons in front.

Brad Smith found space and gave a handball over the top to Harland and West were out to a nine-point lead.

Stephen Barford, who had his hands full at fullback, went to centre half forward and goaled to give the Demons a chance.

But when Brad Henderson marked and goaled the Dragons remained undefeated after six rounds.

For the winners Scott Norman was fantastic all day.

Russell Sawford and Leigh Symons were there when it counted.

Brad Henderson was dangerous all day and Harland, when pushed forward, caused the Demons some headaches.

Ray Mcintosh was clearly best on ground and at times single handidly kept the Demons in the game.

Gav Jonker across half back, Brad Page and Jimmy Martin fought hard all day for the Demons.
