Levi Greenwood hopes for AFL draft

23/10/2007 2:56:42 PM
Whyalla's Levi Greenwood returns from the 2007 AFL National Draft with every hope of being drafted to an AFL club for 2008.

Of the 82 youths that attended the camp, Greenwood was amongst only five players from South Australia to make it in, while Victoria accounted for 46.

The camp is an intensive testing session on the nations best young talent, with scouts and coaches from every AFL club in attendance to observe the tests and results of a wide range of exercises testing components of the players' fitness.

Greenwood put his own name out there with two top 10 finishes, a seventh placing in the repeat 30metre sprints and a fifth placing in the vertical leap, recording a solid 71cm jump.

After a stellar debut year in the Port Adelaide Magpies senior side, Greenwood picked up the best first year player award and most courageous award at the club's best and fairest annual dinner.

Other awards throughout the year include being named South Australia's most valuable player in the National Under 18 Championships, while also managing to earn his first Magarey Medal vote this year.

Greenwood was also nominated for the Coca-Cola Search for a Star award after his stunning debut against South Adelaide.

"He is as definite as definite can be," Port Adelaide Magpies regional coordinator Shane Grimm said.

Grimm said Greenwood has been identified by various independent sources to suit the Kangaroos and Adelaide Crows playing styles, and being the ready-made package, he is looking the goods to go quickly.

Port Magpies won't have such an issue with his leaving, with the Magpies, the Whyalla Football League, and North Whyalla Football Club all likely to receive some form of compensation if Greenwood is drafted.

The Whyalla Football League Development Squad is really showing rewards now, as players such as Ryan McInerney and Josh Walker also take big strides towards playing at senior level.

"Josh was a bit of a late bloomer but went down pretty much off his own back and did it himself, and the club is very happy with him," Grimm said.

Meanwhile, McInerney is also looking towards stepping up next year.

"Ryan definitely has a future in the SANFL," Grimm said.

Port Adelaide Academy head coach Tony Bamford will be travelling over in the coming month to pick through more of Whyalla's talent, with Sam Baulderstone, Matt Holmes, Fraser Marshall, Alex Manners, Scott Norman and Joel Bristow all making the Academy this year.
